Surgical Orthodontics

What is surgical orthodontics?

Just like orthodontics repositions your teeth, surgical orthodontics (which is also known as orthognathic surgery) corrects your jaw irregularities to improve your ability to chew food, speak, and breathe and is also for improve the appearance of your face. Simply put, surgical orthodontics straightens out your jaw.

When would surgical orthodontics be necessary?

Surgical orthodontics is for adults because it is only used after the growth of your jaw is complete. You jaw growth is usually done by age sixteen for girls and age eighteen for boys. The need for it arises when the jaws don’t line up in the correct way and traditional orthodontics will not be able to achieve a proper bite. Surgical orthodontics will properly align your jaw and then braces are used to move your teeth into the correct position.

How Will I Know If I Need It?

Dr. Neal will be able to determine if you need surgical orthodontics when you come in for treatment. The need for surgery depends upon the severity of each individual’s case and the alignment of their jaw.

How Does Orthognathic Surgery Work?

Surgery is performed at the hospital with an oral surgeon. It can take several hours depending on the amount and different kind of surgery that is necessary. After you have completed your surgery, you should be able to return to work or school within two weeks. Because the surgery is a major procedure, we advise that you plan to schedule time off from school or work during the healing period. Once the healing period is complete, Dr. Neal will “fine-tune” your bite. You’ll wear braces after your surgery, and most of them are removed six to twelve months following your surgery. Once your braces are taken off, you will wear a custom retainer to maintain the position of your teeth and new smile.

What Are The Risks?

Orthognathic surgery is not a new procedure – it has been performed for many years. However, just like any other major surgery, their may be risks associated with it.
